'The Brewery in Amsterdam'

Heineken: known world-wide and inextricably tied to Amsterdam. In 1867 Gerard Heineken built a new brewery on a piece of land just outside the city. The impressive buildings were even then a real attraction. And while the brewery grew to become a major international concern the city also grew around it, and the brewery became the centre-point of a new quarter.

This richly illustrated little book deals with the history of the Heineken Brewery om Amsterdam's Stadhouderskade - the buildings and their subsequent conversions and re-buildings - and with the Heinekens and the architects who designed the brewery; wile at the same time it follows the growth of the city and the district on which the brewery has left its stamp: De Pijp.

In 1988, exactly 120 years after the opening, the brewery in Amsterdam closed. But although beer is no longer brewed in the city, the heart of Heineken still beats in Amsterdam. The head office is located there, and in the old buildings of the brewery the Heineken Experience is now established, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors every year from all over the world.
